The name crystal comes from the Greek for "ice" as it was believed that rock crystal was eternally frozen. Rock crystal which is sometimess called clear quartz, is colorless and transparent (clear) or translucent. The most important distinction between types of quartz is whether the individaul crystals are visible to the naked eye or are varieties that are aggregates of crystals visible only uinder high magnification.
